SATCOM-BMD

SATCOM-BMD recently contacted us to design a logo that would provide them with an identity that translated their product and services related to spectral analysis and “fly-away” dishes (stuff well beyond our full comprehension). The business owner wanted to tie in his personal passion for Bernese mountain dogs as a way to soften the imagery of all the high-tech gear that would otherwise represent his business. So, at first it seemed a bit daunting trying to figure out a way to tie together a spectrum analyzer with a “fly-away” dish, with a Bernese mountain dog, but I think the end result worked out well. The client specifically asked us not to design a contemporary logo like many of those we see every day, but rather almost mimic the look of something like a beer label – what is often referred to as a crest. The end result appealed to him right away and only simple modifications got us to the final crest.

Starting a small business from scratch meant there were what seemed like a thousand things to accomplish all at the same time, but in a particular order. SCM Design’s artwork speaks for itself but perhaps more importently, they listened to what I wanted and delivered. Looking through a stack of business cards gathered over the years I came to the conclusion that today’s logos are in a word, “boring.” I wanted something to make my business card stand out in a stack while advertising the company’s core area of expertise. Despite the unique challenges of scale and perspective presented by combining a fly-away antenna, Bernese Mountain Dog and Spectrum Analyzer into a logo, they rose to the occasion and I’m very happy with the results. Anyone familiar with any of the three would recognize them instantly and together they look natural and tell a story.
